Mia Love, the first Black Republican woman elected to the U.S. Congress, has passed away at age 49 in Utah after a battle with brain cancer. Her family announced that she died peacefully at home in Saratoga Springs on Sunday, surrounded by loved ones.
A daughter of Haitian immigrants, Love began her political career in 2003 as a city council member in Saratoga Springs before becoming mayor. In 2014, she made history by winning a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Utah for two terms. She lost her 2018 re-election bid in a close race against Democrat Ben McAdams.
Diagnosed with glioblastoma in 2022, Love surpassed the initial prognosis of 10-15 months. Just weeks before her passing, she wrote an opinion piece expressing gratitude and hope for the future of America.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox honored her as a “trailblazer and visionary leader,” praising her contributions to the state and her belief in the American dream.
