The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, announces she will sue Google if they continue to label the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America across its entire body of water.
She argues that Trump’s order to rename the region is only limited to the section under US control.
Sheinbaum’s contention centers on Google’s depiction of the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” across its entirety, a label she asserts misrepresents the region’s geographical nomenclature.
President Sheinbaum’s statement comes in response to what she describes as an overreach by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who, during his term, ordered the renaming of parts of the Gulf under U.S. jurisdiction to “Gulf of America.”
Sheinbaum argues that this decree should only apply to the sections of the Gulf directly under U.S. control, not the whole body of water shared between several countries.
The announcement has sparked a debate on national sovereignty, the accuracy of digital maps, and the influence of political decisions on geographical naming conventions. Google has yet to respond to the threat of litigation from the Mexican government.
