Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba have been suspended by Major League Soccer after failing to appear at the league’s All-Star game without prior approval. The suspension means both Inter Miami players will miss their club’s upcoming match against FC Cincinnati, as stipulated by MLS rules which enforce participation in the All-Star event unless a valid excuse, such as injury, is provided.

Both Messi and Alba were selected to play for the MLS All-Star team in a friendly against Mexico’s Liga MX stars but withdrew at the last minute on Wednesday without publicly stated reasons. Their absence triggered automatic disciplinary action under the league’s long-standing regulations, which have now drawn public attention due to Messi’s high-profile status.
MLS Commissioner Don Garber acknowledged the importance of Messi to the league but stressed that rules must be enforced. While expressing his admiration for Messi’s contributions, Garber admitted it was a difficult decision and added that the league would review the All-Star participation policy in light of recent events, especially considering the tight match schedules faced by players like Messi.
Garber also highlighted the intense workload Messi has endured, playing nine matches in just 35 days, including appearances in the FIFA Club World Cup. Despite the disciplinary action, Garber suggested there may have been room for more flexible handling of such cases in the future and emphasized a willingness to work with players to improve league policies going forward.
