In the early hours of Monday, a prison break occurred at the Federal Correctional Centre in Kotonkarfe, Kogi State, with at least 12 inmates escaping. Unlike previous incidents involving armed attacks, the inmates reportedly escaped through the tower without causing structural damage, raising suspicions of internal sabotage.

While prison officials have not commented, the Kogi State government confirmed the incident and urged the Federal Government to launch an investigation. The State Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, described the escape as “unfortunate” and assured the public that security operatives are working to recapture the fugitives.
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has directed the State Security Adviser to collaborate with federal authorities to prevent future breaches. The government has also pledged logistical support to enhance security measures.
Fanwo commended security agencies for their swift response and warned residents against harboring escaped inmates. He assured the public that the situation is under control and urged vigilance while normal activities continue.
