Kaduna Court Orders 15 Strokes of Cane for Driver Who Assaulted Police Officer

A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kaduna has sentenced a 36-year-old driver, Mustapha Aminu, to 15 strokes of the cane for assaulting a police officer on duty.

Aminu, a resident of Ungwan Sanusi in Kaduna, was convicted for striking Sergeant Adamu Maigari on the head with a wooden log. He pleaded guilty to the charge.

Presiding over the case, Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel emphasized that the punishment was meant to impress upon the convict the seriousness of his actions. He further stated that it should serve as a deterrent to others who might contemplate similar offenses.

“I hereby direct a court official to administer 15 strokes of the cane,” the magistrate ruled. He also urged Aminu to avoid such behavior and focus on his work to become a responsible citizen.

According to the prosecutor, Inspector Chidi Leo, the incident occurred on January 29 at around 2 p.m. He explained that Aminu had been driving recklessly, and when Sergeant Maigari attempted to stop him, the driver attacked him with a log of wood.

Inspector Leo noted that the act was in violation of Section 237 of the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017.
