Marketers of petroleum products have raised concerns over potential fuel and cooking gas scarcity due to alleged harassment of tanker drivers by Lagos State officials. The dispute arose after the government towed 30 fuel-laden tankers from the Dangote refinery area, prompting drivers to halt fuel loading.
The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) criticized the government’s approach, urging dialogue instead of force. They warned that continued disruption would lead to fuel shortages as filling stations run out of stock. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM) warned that Lagos State’s imposition of illegal levies on petroleum trucks could cripple cooking gas distribution nationwide.
Lagos State authorities defended their actions, citing non-compliance with the e-call-up system and claiming officials were attacked during enforcement. The government warned of stricter enforcement from March 1, 2025.
IPMAN’s South-West Zone threatened to shut down operations if the tankers were not released. The Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) also condemned the alleged extortion by Lagos officials. The ongoing standoff, if unresolved, could escalate fuel and cooking gas shortages, affecting businesses and households nationwide.
