The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has revealed that the tragic boat accident that claimed the life of Nollywood actor Junior Pope and four others in April 2024 was caused by human negligence, not mechanical failure. This was disclosed by NIWA Managing Director, Bola Oyebamiji, during a multi-modal transportation stakeholders forum held in Abuja.
Oyebamiji clarified that contrary to speculations, there were no issues with the boat’s engine, weather conditions, or obstacles in the water. Instead, the passengers reportedly ignored safety regulations, including the rejection of life jackets offered before the trip. This disregard for safety protocols ultimately led to the fatal incident.
The NIWA boss emphasized the importance of adhering to safety rules when using inland waterways and urged all waterway users to partner with the agency in spreading awareness and enforcing safety standards. He warned that such disregard for rules hampers the agency’s efforts to maintain safe transportation on Nigerian waters.
The accident occurred as the victims were returning from a movie shoot titled Another Side of Life, produced by Adanma. The boat capsized near Cable Point, along the River Niger in Asaba, Delta State. Other dignitaries present at the stakeholders’ event included Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo, Air Peace CEO Allen Onyema, and heads of major safety and meteorological agencies.
