A French woman, Sandrine Pissarra, 54, was sentenced to life in prison for the torture and starvation of her 13-year-old daughter, Amandine, who died of a heart attack in 2020 after years of abuse.

Pissarra must serve a minimum of 20 years before parole eligibility. Her ex-partner, Jean-Michel Cros, 49, received a 20-year sentence without parole for failing to provide care.
At the time of her death, Amandine weighed only 28 kilograms (62 pounds) at a height of 1.55 meters (5.1 feet) and suffered severe malnutrition, muscle loss, and septicemia.
She had been confined to a windowless storage room, subjected to physical abuse, and deprived of food. Prosecutors described Pissarra as a “domestic tyrant” and demanded the maximum sentence, which the court upheld.
