The FCT Administration said the move is also part of efforts to address flooding in parts of Abuja. Green areas and parks serve important environmental functions, including helping with stormwater management, and their conversion for commercial purposes can undermine the city’s drainage and environmental infrastructure.
The minister has approved the establishment of a task force to monitor compliance to enforce the directive. He also ordered an investigation into civil servants allegedly responsible for granting illegal approvals for the conversion of green areas into car dealership lots, with officials from relevant FCT departments summoned for questioning.
