EFCC reopens Money Laundering Cases against 13 former Governors and Ministers

In response to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) reopening of the N772bn fraud cases against some former state governors, Nigerians are urging the anti-graft agency to ensure the prosecution of those implicated in the alleged misappropriation of public funds.

Civil society groups, lawyers, and concerned citizens have voiced their expectations for the EFCC to recover the N772bn from the ex-governors and former ministers. The cases involve 13 former governors and ministers, with a significant amount of N772.2bn at stake, according to recent findings.

The anti-graft agency is currently conducting investigations into the alleged looting of N81.6bn in the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. Additionally, $2.2bn is under scrutiny for money laundering, fund diversion, and misappropriation, with individuals like Sambo Dasuki, Raymond Dokpesi, Attahiru Bafarawa, Bashir Yuguda, and others implicated.

Former governors such as Kayode Fayemi, Bello Matawalle, Chimaroke Nnamani, Sullivan Chime, Abdullahi Adamu, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Sule Lamido, Godswill Akpabio, and others are also under investigation by the EFCC.

While some individuals mentioned have refuted the allegations, expressing the need for concrete evidence from the EFCC, others, including social activists and legal experts, have commended the anti-graft agency for reviving the cases. It is emphasized that the court should determine the culpability of the accused individuals, and the recovery of misappropriated funds is essential for the nation’s progress.

Amidst the positive responses, there are cautions for the EFCC to avoid past mistakes and ensure a thorough and lawful process in its pursuit of justice. As the investigations progress, Nigerians remain watchful, expecting accountability and the restoration of looted funds to contribute to the country’s financial integrity.
