The Ebonyi State House of Assembly has raised alarm over the sharp increase in house and shop rents across the state, expressing concern about the growing hardship this poses for residents, especially low-income earners. This concern arose during deliberations on a new executive bill introduced by Governor Francis Nwifuru, aimed at regulating the conduct of landlords and housing agents.
Lawmakers voiced frustration over how skyrocketing rents have forced many people to abandon urban areas for rural communities or resort to living in makeshift shelters. They emphasized that the unregulated rise in rental costs has worsened the living conditions of the masses and called for urgent intervention to protect tenants from exploitation.
In response to the concerns raised, the Leader of the House, Hon. Ogbonna Ikoro, moved that the bill be advanced to the committee stage. The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Moses Odunwa, supported the motion and praised the Governor for initiating the bill, stating that its eventual passage would significantly ease the burden on citizens struggling with high housing costs.
To ensure inclusive dialogue and effective solutions, a 9-member ad hoc committee chaired by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Chinedu Onah, was set up to review the bill with input from key stakeholders. Additionally, the Assembly marked its two-year anniversary, celebrating the progress and impact made by lawmakers in their respective constituencies and across the state.
