The Department of State Services (DSS) has paid an additional ₦10 million to a Jos-based businessman who was accidentally shot by its operatives in 2016 while searching for a suspect.
Initially ordered by the court to compensate the victim with ₦10 million, the DSS Director General, Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, doubled the amount as a goodwill gesture, bringing the total compensation to ₦20 million.
Beyond financial settlement, the DSS has moved the victim to its medical facility for comprehensive treatment to help him regain mobility. According to a DSS source, the intervention aims to rehabilitate the businessman and restore function in his affected limbs.
The victim, who is currently unable to fast due to his condition, is expected to resume treatment at the DSS medical facility after Ramadan. Expressing gratitude, he said, “May Allah bless the DSS DG for his kindness. It was my destiny to suffer this accident, but I am grateful for the support I have received.”
His lawyer, Mr. Idris, who handled the case pro bono, commended the DSS for its accountability and compassion. In a letter to the DSS DG, he praised the agency’s commitment to justice and human dignity, stating that this gesture strengthens public confidence in law enforcement and the judicial system.
