DR Congo and Rwanda Leaders Call for Ceasefire Amid Escalating Conflict

In a surprising diplomatic move, DR Congo’s President Félix Tshisekedi and Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame met in Qatar, calling for an “immediate and unconditional” ceasefire in eastern DR Congo. This marks their first direct talks since the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels intensified their offensive, leading to 7,000 deaths since January.

Despite DR Congo accusing Rwanda of supporting M23 claims backed by the UN and US Rwanda denies involvement, insisting its forces act in self-defense. The conflict has also been fueled by accusations of Rwanda exploiting DR Congo’s mineral wealth.

The meeting, facilitated by Qatar, aims to establish lasting peace, though M23 rebels refused earlier peace talks in Angola and have recently seized key cities like Goma and Bukavu. It remains unclear how the ceasefire will be enforced, but both leaders agreed to continue discussions.
