Civil society organisations led by Justice Empowerment Initiative and the Nigerian Slum/Informal Settlement Federation, have criticised the Lagos State Government over the ongoing forced eviction of residents in Makoko, Oko Agbon, and Sogunro communities, s, warned that the evictions could displace thousands of people without any plans for resettlement.
According to the organisations, Makoko alone has a population of over 80,000 people and is more than just a settlement. They described the area and its neighbouring communities as cultural landmarks known for their unique architecture and vibrant lifestyle, which also attract visitors from around the world.
The group alleged that Lagos State Government violating court orders as well as Nigerian and international laws. They recalled that residents had previously cooperated with the government during a demolition exercise in December 2025, which focused on clearing a 30-metre setback under high-tension power lines. Community leaders had assured residents that compensation would be provided and that the rest of the communities would be safe, leading residents to comply in good faith.
The groups described the current evictions as especially harsh, coming during a festive period and amid severe economic hardship in Nigeria. Many displaced residents are reportedly sleeping in overcrowded homes or open canoes. The organisations called on both the Lagos State and Federal Governments to stop further evictions and to respect the rights, dignity, and welfare of the affected communities.
