China to Launch Cultural and Educational Centre at UNIPORT

The Chinese Government, through its Consul-General in Lagos, Ms Yan Yuqing, has announced plans to establish a Chinese Centre at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT). The initiative, revealed during a delegation visit led by Prof. Liu Hongwu of Zhejiang Normal University, aims to foster deeper cultural and educational ties between China and Nigeria. The centre will offer students access to Chinese language, culture, training, and academic opportunities. Additionally, a new platform called ‘China Window’ will be launched to promote broader understanding and engagement with Chinese society and education.

In response, UNIPORT Vice-Chancellor Prof. Owunari Georgewill expressed gratitude to the Chinese Government for selecting the university, pledging full support for the initiative. He announced that a Chinese Language Programme has already begun as part of the centre’s rollout, highlighting its role in improving students’ employability in Chinese-run businesses in Nigeria. Georgewill emphasized the importance of language and cultural skills in bridging Nigeria’s labour market gap, calling the partnership a timely opportunity for long-term growth and collaboration between the two nations.
