On Monday, Canada’s Prime Minister JustinTrudeau announced his resignation. According to cbsnews, the news comes amid growing troubles occurring under his leadership.

Trudeau spoke to the media outside of his home and said, “I care deeply about this country, and I will always be motivated by what is in the best interests of Canadians. The fact is, despite best efforts to work through it, parliament has been paralyzed for months, after what has been the longest session of a minority parliament in Canadian history. I intend to resign as party leader, as prime minister, after the party selects its next leader through a robust, nationwide competitive process.”
Canada’s parliament will be halted until a new leader is chosen and will resume in late March. CBS notes that some of the troubles that have been occurring include housing affordability, the high cost of living, and high levels of immigration.
The December 16th resignation of Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland also led people to call for Trudeau’s resignation. Additionally, Donald Trump’s announcement of a “potiential blanket of 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico if they don’t take stronger action against illegal immigration and drug trafficking concerns” increased the demand for Trudeau to step down.
Trudeau became prime minister in 2015, and his party, the Liberal Party, won the following two elections, in 2019 and 2021.
