The family of the late Dr. Tunji Braithwaite has strongly criticized former President Olusegun Obasanjo for his recent comments about their father, calling them an offensive attempt to tarnish his legacy. At a book launch for General Ibrahim Babangida, Obasanjo referred to Braithwaite dismissively and accused him of harboring resentment.
In response, Braithwaite’s son, Olumide, delivered a sharp rebuttal, describing his father as a fearless patriot who opposed all military regimes, including those of Obasanjo, Babangida, and Abacha. The family condemned Obasanjo’s remarks as an effort to rewrite history and downplay Braithwaite’s contributions to democracy and human rights.
They highlighted his defiance against military oppression, including his legal defense of Fela Kuti and his political activism through the Nigeria Advance Party. The family also noted Obasanjo’s failure to pay respects upon Braithwaite’s passing in 2016, unlike other national figures.
Urging Obasanjo to be more mindful of his words, Olumide reaffirmed that his father’s legacy is firmly established, independent of external validation.
