The Anambra State government has initiated an investigation into the alleged brutality carried out by members of the state’s Anti-Touting Squad, especially in Onitsha, a major commercial hub. This decision was prompted by a viral video showing the squad allegedly subjecting a group of suspected touts to harsh treatment.

While the government reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on touting, it emphasized the need for a thorough and unbiased investigation into the video. Authorities stressed that combating criminal activity must always align with the rule of law and respect for citizens’ rights.
Speaking on behalf of the government, the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, urged the public to be cautious about the spread of unverified media, noting that disinformation has become more prevalent in the age of artificial intelligence. He reassured citizens that the Soludo-led administration prioritizes the rights and dignity of all residents.
The anti-touting unit, commonly referred to as “ndi Akodo,” has long been a controversial group within Anambra State. Both the government and residents have raised concerns about their methods, prompting increased scrutiny over their operations and now a formal investigation.
