Adelabu Warns Power Agencies: No More Excuses, Local Capacity Now Priority

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has issued a stern warning to federal power agencies, stating that excuses for poor performance will no longer be tolerated under the Tinubu administration. At a recent management retreat in Abuja, he unveiled a 10-year plan to address the shortage of skilled professionals in the power sector by training at least 1,200 electrical engineers. He emphasized a new “Nigeria First” procurement policy and the forthcoming Executive Order mandating contract awards to local firms, reflecting a shift toward self-reliance and local expertise. Adelabu noted improved grid stability since January 2025 but stressed that faster, more measurable progress is essential.

He further announced that the ministry’s performance will be reviewed quarterly by the presidential monitoring unit and encouraged staff to counter public scepticism with tangible results. Permanent Secretary Mahmuda Mamman reinforced the urgency, linking staff promotion to performance and stressing the importance of citizen-focused strategies. Both leaders emphasized accountability, transparency, and practical action, urging the retreat participants to align with President Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda and ensure stable electricity as a cornerstone for national development.
