Following reports that Peter Obi was registered at the party’s zonal office in Enugu, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has clarified that its membership registration process has been misunderstood.
The ADC made the clarification in a New Year message issued in Abuja, the party’s National Chairman, Ralph Gombe, said the clarification was necessary to address misleading information in the public space.
Gombe explained that the ADC is guided by order, discipline, and strict adherence to its constitution. According to him, party membership can only be obtained through registration at the ward level, which is the only constitutionally recognised entry point for new members.
He stressed that the party’s constitution does not allow registration at zonal or national offices. As a result, any registration carried out outside the ward level is considered irregular and invalid. The ADC leadership has therefore distanced itself from the reported registration of Peter Obi at the Enugu zonal office and said it is investigating the breach.
The clarification comes after the Labour Party described Obi’s reported defection to the ADC as a “liberation.” The Labour Party said it regretted presenting Obi as its presidential candidate in 2023, adding that his exit only confirmed an existing political separation caused by internal leadership disputes.
