Nigerian Labour Leader Dies During Meeting In Geneva

Following 9fficial confirmation of the sudden passing of Comrade Domingo Michael Adeleke who died  on Monday, 8th June 2026, following a brief illness during the ongoing 114th Session of the International Labour Convention in Geneva, Switzerland., the Lagos State Government, has extends his heartfelt condolences to his family.

On behalf of the Lagos State Government, the Lagos State Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro, commiserates with his family, colleagues, members of the Labour Centres, and workers across Lagos State on this unexpected, painful and irreparable loss.

Until his passing, Comrade Domingo served as the Chairman of the Lagos State Joint Negotiating Council (JNC).

He was a delegate of the Lagos State group to the 114th Convention when he reportedly took ill and subsequently passed on.

The Head of Service described the late labour leader as a dedicated and committed unionist who devoted his career to promoting the welfare, rights, and interests of workers.

Earlier in a State, the NLC also extended condolences to his family, colleagues and members of the labour movement, describing Adeleke’s death as a significant loss. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, the NLC family and all comrades across Lagos State. May his soul rest in peace, and may his commitment to workers’ rights continue to inspire us,” the Congress said.

The NLC added that he remained committed to the promotion of decent work, workers’ welfare and social justice throughout his career. “Comrade Domingo was a committed trade unionist whose dedication to Nigerian workers and the struggle for decent work took him to the global stage right to the end.

“His loss is felt deeply by all who knew him and worked alongside him,” the official added.
The NLC said its leadership had visited the hospital where his body is being kept and had begun arrangements for the repatriation of his remains.

“The NLC leadership earlier today went to the hospital to see his body in solidarity, mourn his passing, and begin the process of arranging the necessary procedures,” the official said.

Adeleke was also a member of the Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU) until his passing.
