Ghana RemoveAdopts Local Languages As Official Language In Schools

In a move aims to help children learn better by studying in their mother tongues the languages they understand best, the Ghana Education Service has been directed to implement with immediate effect a new policy that  basic schools in the country will use Ghanian language as their main medium of instruction instead of English language nationwide.

Speaking at the launch of the Free Tertiary Education Programme for Persons with Disabilities at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Ghana Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu stressed that “effective education reform must begin from the foundation. Adding that.

“Mr President, you have emphasised that we should shift focus to basic education and improve learning outcomes at the foundational level.”

“The Ghana Education Service has been directed to implement the new policy nationwide and teachers must now make the use of the mother tongue compulsory in their classrooms.’
