BRICS Summit to Denounce Trump Tariffs Amid Leadership Absences and Middle East Tensions

The upcoming BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro is expected to unite member countries against U.S. President Donald Trump’s aggressive trade policies, particularly his recent wave of import tariffs. Although the final statement is unlikely to mention Trump or the U.S. by name, it will strongly criticize the economic uncertainty caused by such unilateral actions. Diplomatic sources revealed that the joint declaration will reflect shared frustration among the bloc’s members over what they view as unfair trade practices by Washington.

However, the political impact of the summit is dampened by the absence of major figures like Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin. i’s no-show his first in 12 yearis attributed to a mix of strategic caution and diplomatic dynamics, especially with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi receiving a warm welcome in Brazil. Putin, facing war crimes charges, will join the summit via video. These absences challenge the appearance of unity and diminish the event’s symbolic strength.

Internal disagreements among BRICS members, especially over the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, have also complicated preparations for the summit. Iran’s absence reflects broader tensions, as its negotiators push for a stronger stance on Israel and Palestine, which some members are hesitant to support. Despite the discord, Brazil remains optimistic that BRICS can reach a unified position on major geopolitical issues, just as it has in the past.

The summit will also address topics like artificial intelligence and healthcare cooperation. With new members like Ethiopia and Indonesia recently joining the group, BRICS now represents nearly half the global population and 40% of the world’s economic output. This expansion boosts its global influence but also introduces diverse perspectives that make consensus harder to achieve. Brazil’s President Lula da Silva hopes the summit will enhance Brazil’s international profile ahead of a crucial election year.
