Nigeria Secures $2.2 Billion for Health Reforms, Commissions World-Class Medical Centre

Nigeria has secured over $2.2 billion in health sector commitments through the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative launched by the Tinubu administration in December 2023. President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, emphasized that the funds will be used to renovate over 17,000 primary health centres, train 120,000 frontline workers, and double national health insurance coverage within three years. He stressed that these are actionable goals already underway, not just lofty ambitions.

As a major milestone, President Tinubu commissioned the African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) in Abuja, developed by Afreximbank in partnership with King’s College Hospital, London.

The AMCE features state-of-the-art facilities including the first 18 MeV Cyclotron in West Africa, advanced imaging technologies, and Africa’s largest stem cell lab. The hospital will offer cutting-edge treatments such as stem cell transplants, clinical trials, and AI-powered diagnostics.

The President praised AMCE as a symbol of African resilience and innovation, designed not just to treat the sick but to serve as a centre for medical research and training. He highlighted plans to expand the facility with a teaching hospital, nursing school, and housing for medical staff. Tinubu acknowledged Afreximbank President Prof. Benedict Oramah for leading the initiative, describing it as a bold step in making Nigeria a healthcare hub.

Finance Minister Wale Edun revealed that the hospital cost an estimated $400 million, fully mobilised by the private sector. He described the centre as a timely and transformative healthcare solution for Africa, combining modern science and infrastructure. Both Tinubu and Edun stressed the importance of aligning healthcare development with broader infrastructure investment, such as roads and electricity, to ensure the success of such world-class facilities.
