Trump Administration Targets Harvard’s Federal Funding Amid Ongoing Disputes

The Trump administration has launched a formal review of federal grants and contracts awarded to Harvard University, potentially affecting around $100 million in funding. The Government Services Agency (GSA) is expected to instruct federal agencies to examine their contracts with Harvard and assess whether they can be canceled or redirected. A draft letter from the White House cites allegations of discrimination and antisemitism as part of the justification for this move. However, essential funding related to affiliated hospitals and critical agency functions may be exempt if agencies provide sufficient justification.

Harvard has warned that cutting federal funding would halt key medical and scientific research in areas such as cancer, heart disease, and infectious diseases. The university emphasized that such funding is not a gift, but payment for high-priority government work. Harvard president Alan Garber criticized the move, stating that it would harm not just the university but also the nation’s research capabilities. This action follows an earlier incident in April when the administration froze $2.2 billion in funding, prompting Harvard to sue in response.

The conflict between the Trump administration and Harvard has intensified in recent months, expanding beyond funding to include restrictions on the university’s ability to enroll international students and host foreign researchers. That policy shift caused significant disruption and led Harvard to file another lawsuit, citing violations of constitutional and federal law. These escalating disputes highlight a growing political and legal confrontation between the federal government and one of the nation’s most prestigious academic institutions.
