Governor Umo Eno Hints at Leaving PDP, Sparks Defection Speculation

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has stirred political speculation after likening the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to a faulty aircraft, implying he may leave the party ahead of 2027. At a constituency outreach in Ukanafun, Eno questioned the PDP’s viability and hinted at joining another platform, potentially the All Progressives Congress (APC), amid rising internal issues within the PDP and recent defections such as that of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

Despite expressing dissatisfaction with the PDP, Governor Eno urged his supporters to remain committed to his administration’s development goals. During the event, he distributed empowerment packages to over 400 constituents, including grants for traders and farmers, substantial MSME funding, and business development support. He advised beneficiaries to avoid risky ventures and use the funds for meaningful economic growth.

Governor Eno emphasized the importance of direct engagement with the people, stating that governance must extend beyond elections. He confirmed that four of the state’s ten federal constituencies have been reached in the ongoing outreach initiative, which will guide the 2026 budget. While no formal defection has occurred, Eno’s statements have intensified discussions on the future of the PDP and the shifting political landscape in Akwa Ibom.
