Court Grants FG Request to Shield Witnesses in Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial

The Federal High Court in Abuja has approved the Federal Government’s request to protect the identities of witnesses in the ongoing trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed IPOB. Justice James Omotosho granted the request after an ex-parte application by FG’s legal team, allowing witnesses to testify behind screens and be identified by acronyms.

The move, unopposed by Kanu’s lawyers, is aimed at ensuring witness security. Kanu is facing a seven-count charge of treasonable felony, having pleaded not guilty. His trial, which restarted afresh under Justice Omotosho, follows years of legal battles, including a brief release on bail and a controversial re-arrest from Kenya. The Supreme Court in December 2023 allowed the continuation of the trial after overturning a prior ruling by the Court of Appeal that had dismissed the charges.
