The Nigerian government has congratulated South Africa on the 31st anniversary of its Freedom Day, celebrated on April 27. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, conveyed the nation’s warm regards through a statement, highlighting the significance of the day as a victory for democracy and an enduring symbol of resilience in South Africa’s history.
Tuggar emphasized the long-standing bond between Nigeria and South Africa, rooted in mutual support during the anti-apartheid struggle. He reminded that Nigeria played a pivotal role through diplomatic, material, and moral support, underscoring both countries’ shared commitment to justice and pan-Africanism.
Looking toward the future, Tuggar reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with South Africa in various sectors, including trade, cultural exchanges, and youth empowerment. He honored the sacrifices of key anti-apartheid figures, including Walter Sisulu, Nelson Mandela, and Thabo Mbeki, and reiterated the nations’ collective responsibility to promote peace, security, and development across Africa.
