FBI Arrests 22 Nigerians in Sextortion Scheme Linked to Teen Suicides

The FBI, in collaboration with law enforcement agencies from Canada, Australia, Nigeria, and the UK, arrested 22 Nigerians involved in a global sextortion ring dubbed Operation Artemis. This operation, launched nearly two years ago, targeted criminals who posed as young women online to coerce teen boys into sending explicit images, then extorted them for money.

Despite payments, threats often continued, contributing to over 20 teen suicides in the United States since 2021. Interviews conducted at the EFCC offices in Lagos revealed that perpetrators preferred sextortion due to its quick financial returns.

According to the FBI and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, reports of sextortion have surged, with over 54,000 victims and nearly $65 million in financial losses recorded in the past two years. Australian authorities also noted a spike, reporting around 300 new cases monthly. The emotional toll was highlighted by the story of a father whose 16-year-old son died by suicide following sextortion threats, emphasizing the devastating consequences of these crimes.
