Man Sentenced to Death in Kano for Killing Stepmother and Sister

A Kano High Court has sentenced 22-year-old Sagiru Rijiyar-Zaki to death by hanging for the brutal murder of his stepmother, Rabiatu Sagir, and his sister, Munawara. The court, presided over by Justice Amina Adamu-Aliyu, found the accused guilty of culpable homicide after the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. The tragic incident occurred on January 7, 2023, in Rijiyar Zaki Quarters, Kano, where the convict stabbed his stepmother in the neck with a screwdriver and strangled his sister with a scarf following a dispute.

Prosecutor Lamido Abba-Sorondinki presented two witnesses and key exhibits during the trial, while the defence counsel, Mubarak Abubakar, had the accused testify in his defence. Despite Rijiyar-Zaki’s denial of the charges, the evidence presented led to his conviction under Section 221(a) of the Kano State Penal Code Law, 1991. Justice Adamu-Aliyu subsequently sentenced him to death by hanging.
