Sultan of Sokoto Labels Social Media a “Terrorist Organisation”

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, has made a controversial statement, likening social media to a terrorist organisation.

Speaking at a public event on Wednesday, the prominent traditional ruler urged Nigerian security agencies to take decisive action against the dangers posed by digital platforms.

In his address, the Sultan condemned the growing spread of misinformation on social media. He expressed concern that individuals can create and disseminate false narratives from the comfort of their homes, often leading to societal unrest. He described such acts as dangerous, pointing out that these platforms allow fabricated content to thrive without verification or accountability.

The Sultan’s message served as a strong appeal for regulatory control over digital media, calling on authorities to treat social media with the same seriousness as any national security threat. He concluded by insisting that security forces must tackle the issue firmly, referring to social media as a “terrorist organisation” that needs to be confronted for the stability and safety of society.
