President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid tribute to former President Olusegun Obasanjo on his 88th birthday, describing him as an extraordinary leader whose life and career have significantly shaped Nigeria’s history.

Tinubu praised Obasanjo’s pivotal roles, from receiving Biafra’s surrender in 1970 to becoming the first military leader to hand over power to a civilian government in 1979. He also acknowledged Obasanjo’s return as a democratic president in 1999, a period that marked the beginning of 25 years of uninterrupted democracy.
While describing him as a statesman with global influence, Tinubu admitted that Obasanjo’s interventions in national affairs have often been controversial but have played a vital role in shaping public policies and holding leaders accountable.
He prayed for Obasanjo’s continued strength and long life, recognizing his dedication to peace, good governance, and Pan-Africanism.
