US Tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China Set to Begin Amid Trade Tensions

The US is set to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico starting Tuesday, with the exact rates to be determined by President Donald Trump. The move is in response to concerns over illegal drugs and migration. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick confirmed that the tariffs will proceed as planned but remain subject to negotiation.

Additionally, the US is implementing a 10% tariff on Chinese imports, citing Beijing’s failure to curb fentanyl exports. If enforced, this would raise total tariffs on Chinese goods to at least 20%. In response, China is reportedly preparing countermeasures, potentially targeting US agricultural products.

Canada has warned that tariffs will hurt both economies and has prepared retaliatory duties on $30 billion worth of US goods, including pasta, clothing, and perfume. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has refuted US claims that Canada is a significant source of fentanyl. Meanwhile, Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has emphasized that while Mexico supports cooperation, it will not accept subordination.

Trump has also announced a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports effective March 12, along with potential reciprocal tariffs on individual countries and the European Union. The escalating tensions raise concerns about a broader trade war.
