Mass Casualties in South African Illegal Gold Mine Rescue Operation

Authorities in South Africa have recovered 60 bodies from a disused gold mine in Stilfontein as part of an ongoing effort to remove illegal miners.

Since operations began, 106 miners have been rescued and arrested, while 51 additional deaths were confirmed. The total number of miners underground remains uncertain. A specialized machine was deployed to extract survivors and bodies from the 2.6-kilometer-deep mine.

Video evidence suggests many more may be trapped or deceased. Since August, over 1,500 illegal miners have been arrested, with 121 deported. Many survivors were found emaciated due to a previous attempt to cut off their food and water, which was later overturned by a court ruling.
