The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) raided a massive facility in Umumeje village, Osisioma Ngwa, Abia State, filled with expired and counterfeit drugs.
The facility, which included a two-story building, boys’ quarters, and multiple bungalows, served as a hub for distributing and rebranding expired foreign medications.
NAFDAC’s South-East Director, Martins Iluyomade, revealed that expired drugs such as antihypertensives, antibiotics, immune boosters, and dietary supplements were being repackaged with new expiration labels. A machine used for rebranding was also discovered.
While some arrests were made, the main suspect remains at large. Iluyomade emphasized that the government is intensifying efforts to eliminate fake and expired drugs, with a proposal for stricter penalties, including the death sentence, for offenders.
