The Sudanese army has recaptured Wad Madani, the capital of El Gezira state, from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), marking a potential turning point in Sudan’s nearly two-year civil war.

Civilians and soldiers celebrated the victory, as the army’s success could help cut RSF supply lines to Khartoum and boost morale.
The war, which began in April 2023 over military integration, has displaced over 12 million people and led to a severe humanitarian crisis.
El Gezira, a once-fertile region, suffered famine risks and violent raids under RSF occupation. The RSF withdrew after being overwhelmed by recent army advances, airstrikes, and supply shortages.
As they retreated toward Khartoum, reports of looting and violence against civilians emerged. Experts warn of intensified fighting, especially in Khartoum and Darfur, as the army continues its offensive.
