In celebration to mark l the 2025 World World Hydrography Day, the National Hydrographic Agency held a press conference on West African Hydrographic Summit with the theme for this year’s event is “Seabed Mapping: Enabling Ocean Action.” which aims to guarantee safety of navigation to both mariners and seafarers.

Speaking at the Naval Headquarters Abuja on June 17, 2025, the Hydrographer of the Federation and CEO National Hydrographic Agency, Rear Admiral Ayo Olugbode emphasized hydrography’s role in maritime safety, economic growth and sustainability. He highlighted Nigeria’s contribution of over 85,000 sq km to the Seabed and the 2030 Initiative. He also stated that this year’s event will be a three-day event which will feature exhibitions and industry Presentation, Plenary Sessions and 2025 world Hydrography Day Celebration, which includes panel discussions and a dinner and award night.

Rear Admiral Olugbode further noted that Nigeria’s hydrographic efforts has assisted in the reduction of piracy, aided revenue generation for the nation through the provision of electronic charts in supporting key sectors like oil, tourism and shipping. He called for regional collaboration and wider public involvement in ocean mapping.
