The Senate has approved the second reading of a Bill seeking to convert Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) into a full-fledged university. Sponsored by Senate Leader Micheal Opeyemi Bamidele, the Bill aims to establish the Yaba Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies in Lagos.
Bamidele emphasized that the legislation would give legal backing to President Tinubu’s earlier fiat approving the upgrade. He noted the institution’s readiness to transition into a university while remaining committed to its mandate of producing skilled manpower.
Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who presided over the plenary, confirmed unanimous support for the Bill through a voice vote.
In the same session, the Senate also passed a Bill for the third reading to establish the Federal University of Agriculture in Kura, Kano State. Sponsored by Senator Rufa’i Hanga and backed by Senator Simon Lalong’s committee, the Bill seeks to expand access to agricultural education in Nigeria.
