The lawmakers, who represent Omuma and Degema constituencies of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Sylvanus Nwankwo and Peter Abbey, have announced their decision to withdrawn their support for the planned impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy.
At a press conference in Port Harcourt on Monday, the explained that their change of position followed strong appeals from elders and political leaders within and outside Rivers State, who urged restraint and dialogue. According to them, while the impeachment notice had already been issued, they are now calling on their colleagues in the Assembly to temper justice with mercy and seek an amicable resolution rather than proceed with impeachment.
Despite acknowledging that the governor and his deputy allegedly breached constitutional provisions, the lawmakers emphasized reconciliation over confrontation. The impeachment notice was served on the governor and his deputy last Thursday over claims of gross misconduct, but the latest development signals growing internal resistance to the move.
