A 30-year-old woman, Cynthia Oguzie, has tragically died after an overhead water tank crashed through the ceiling of her Lekki apartment in Lagos, just two months after she moved in.
Viral videos show the aftermath of the collapse, with the water tank buried in rubble and Oguzie’s motionless body on her bed. Although one woman in the footage claimed she was still alive at the time, later images confirmed her death at a hospital.
Her brother, Chukwuebuka Nathaniel, blamed the incident on poor construction and substandard materials, calling out the building’s landlord and engineer. He revealed the landlord claimed to be outside Nigeria and had relied solely on videos and photos from the site engineer.
Outrage has erupted on social media, with users slamming construction negligence and unqualified builders. Many allege that cost-cutting practices and the use of uncertified materials caused the fatal accident.
Oguzie’s funeral has been scheduled for Friday, April 25. Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Command says it may not yet have received an official report of the incident, and the state government is yet to comment.
