Tinubu Courts South as 2027 Elections Loom

With the 2027 presidential election 715 days away, political maneuvering is in full swing as potential aspirants and their allies engage in strategic alignments. The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, has affirmed the North’s support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election, with plans for power to return to the North in 2031.

Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing Northern backing for Tinubu’s second term. Meanwhile, sources indicate that Tinubu is actively courting South-East and South-South leaders to improve his electoral prospects. In 2023, despite winning the presidency, Tinubu struggled in the South, particularly in the South-East, where he secured only 5.8% of votes.

The APC ticket for 2027 appears to be Tinubu’s unless he opts out. However, securing victory requires not just a majority of votes but also 25% in at least two-thirds of the states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), where he fell short in 2023. His campaign will likely focus on consolidating Northern support while making inroads into regions where he previously underperformed.
