Special Adviser on Policy Communication to president Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Daniel Bwala has announced that, President Bola Tinubu will soon meet with U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss allegations of a Christian genocide in Nigeria.
Bwala explained that the meeting will focus on counterterrorism cooperation and correcting misconceptions about the nature of terrorist attacks in Nigeria. He emphasized that both leaders share common interests in fighting insurgency and global terrorism, noting that the U.S. under Trump had previously supported Nigeria by approving arms sales.
Bwala stressed that presidrnt Tinubu remains committed to addressing insecurity through cooperation, dialogue, and strengthened international partnerships. He assured that the meeting between both presidents will aim to clarify misunderstandings and reaffirm Nigeria’s dedication to fighting terrorism in all its forms.
The issue gained attention after U.S. lawmaker Riley Moore accused Nigeria of systematic persecution of Christians and urged Secretary of State Marco Rubio to redesignate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern.” He also called for the suspension of U.S. arms sales until Nigeria shows clear efforts to end the violence.
President Trump had on Friday, 31 October 2025 declared Nigeria a “country of particular concern,” asserting that Christianity is under threat in the nation. He said thousands of Christians were being killed by radical Islamists and ordered U.S. lawmakers to investigate the situation, even suggesting potential U.S. military involvement if the killings continue.
