Tension in Ikot Abasi as Soldier Allegedly Kills Youth Over Diesel Theft

A soldier attached to Sterling Global Limited in Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom State, allegedly shot and killed a youth from Ete community for reportedly stealing diesel.

The incident, which occurred on February 25, 2025, sparked outrage among local youths, leading to a violent reprisal attack. They severely beat the soldier and set fire to several company vehicles, including trucks and a Hilux.

This killing follows a similar incident just a week earlier, further escalating tensions in the area. The injured soldier is currently receiving treatment, while the Akwa Ibom State Police Command has acknowledged the unrest but has yet to confirm any fatalities.

The violence has led to road blockades along the East-West Road to Port Harcourt, with authorities advising travelers to avoid the area until normalcy is restored.
