Residents of Munga Dosso in Karim-Lamido LGA of Taraba State have appealed to the state government to enforce the anti-open grazing law signed in 2018 to curb persistent clashes between herders and farmers. The youth leader, Robert Bukar, highlighted the devastating impact of recent attacks by suspected herders that resulted in multiple deaths and destruction of property, emphasizing the urgent need for law enforcement and stronger security presence in the area.
Bukar lamented the absence of government officials at the mass burial of 12 victims and criticized elected representatives for failing to visit or support the affected community. Despite the state government sending relief materials, the community believes symbolic solidarity and responsive governance are more essential during crises. He described the situation as a growing humanitarian crisis marked by loss, displacement, trauma, and restricted access to basic needs.
Furthermore, Bukar expressed concern over the perceived lack of justice, citing instances where herders arrested with weapons were quickly released while community members were frequently detained. He called on the state to deploy more security personnel, ensure safe access to farmlands, and empower the newly formed administrative committee to conduct a transparent and thorough investigation that holds perpetrators accountable.
