Three bodies have been recovered following the recent boat accident in Kojiyo, Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the National Inland Waterways Authority confirmed that the victims were discovered at different locations in Kojiyo, Bare, and Wurno, and were buried according to Islamic rites. Search operations are still ongoing to locate other missing persons.
In response to the tragedy, the Sokoto State Government sent a delegation led by Deputy Governor Idris Muhammad-Gobir to condole with the affected families. During the visit, the government donated ₦20 million and 100 bags of grains to the bereaved households as immediate relief support. The gesture was aimed at easing the burden of the victims’ families during this difficult time.
The deputy governor further assured residents of the government’s commitment to improving safety on waterways. He revealed plans to complete the ongoing bridge construction in the area, procure motorised boats, and distribute life jackets across six riverine local governments. According to him, Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s administration is determined to put in place long-term measures to ensure safe and reliable transportation for riverine communities.
