Former Kaduna senator Shehu Sani has revealed that he narrowly avoided a six-month suspension from the Senate in 2018 for publicly disclosing lawmakers’ salaries and allowances.
According to Sani, he was saved by the intervention of then-Senate President Bukola Saraki and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu.
In March 2018, Sani disclosed that senators received thirteen million, five hundred thousand naira (NGN 13,500,000) monthly as running costs, alongside two hundred million naira (NGN 200,000,000) for constituency projects. His revelation sparked backlash from colleagues, as such financial details are usually kept secret.
Sani’s statement follows the recent six-month suspension of Kogi Central senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, after a February 20 confrontation with Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Akpoti-Uduaghan later claimed in a February 28 interview that her troubles in the Senate began after rejecting alleged sexual advances from Akpabio.
