Reps advocate to establish a single six-year term for both the President and Governors.

Constitutional Amendment proposing that the President and 1st Vice President should be chosen from the same region (either north or south), and stipulating that the 1st Vice President would assume the role of President in case the President is unable to serve, i.e., V.P. (Succession), V.P. (Administration and Economy).

A collective of House of Representatives members, known as ‘Reform Minded Lawmakers’, have proposed electoral reforms, including advocating for a single six-year term for Presidents and Governors. These suggestions are part of several bills currently under consideration by the House.

The legislators issued the statement during a news briefing in Abuja on Monday.

Rep. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere emphasized that constitutional and electoral reform has been a significant issue in Nigeria since gaining independence from Britain in 1960. He pointed out that in the last 50 years, this matter has caused unrest and exacerbated religious and ethnic tensions in the country.
