Ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed that 110 political associations have formally applied for registration as political parties. This development signals a growing interest among various groups to participate in the country’s political process.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, made the disclosure during the second regular consultative meeting with media executives held in Abuja on Wednesday. The meeting served as a platform to discuss preparations for the upcoming elections and the role of media in strengthening democracy.
The surge in registration requests underscores the dynamic nature of Nigeria’s political landscape, as new groups seek to challenge existing parties and contribute to national development. INEC is expected to review these applications in accordance with the legal requirements before granting approvals.
