Reflecting on his years in public service Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said one of the biggest mistakes he made during his political career was the decision to pick Atiku Abubakar as his running mate in the 1999 presidential election.

Firmer president Obasanjo made the statement while speaking at a leadership and entrepreneurship event in Abeokuta, Ogun State. He said he had made several genuine mistakes in life but was grateful that he was able to overcome them. According to him, selecting his “number two remains one of the decisions he regrets the most.
Obasanjo and Atiku served together as President and Vice President from 1999 to 2007. However, their relationship later deteriorated following political disagreements, and both men have publicly criticized each other on several occasions over the years.
The former president’s comments have once again drawn attention to the long-running political rift between the two leaders, whose relationship has remained strained despite occasional attempts at reconciliation. His latest remarks have continued to generate discussion across Nigeria’s political landscape.
