The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) may spend up to N307.6 billion on corps members’ allowances following an increase from N33,000 to N77,000, as announced in September 2024.

The increment, prompted by the new minimum wage bill signed into law in May 2024, affects an estimated 333,000 corps members mobilized annually in three batches. With each batch receiving N25.64 billion, the total expenditure for the year amounts to N307.6 billion.
Despite the budgetary allocation of N430.7 billion to the NYSC in the 2025 national budget its highest in five years the new allowance has yet to be implemented five months after its announcement.
NYSC’s Acting Director of Press, Caroline Embu, attributed the delay to a lack of cash backing. However, newly appointed NYSC Director-General, Brig. Gen. Olakunle Nafiu, reportedly assured that payments would begin in March 2025.
